In this article one of the soon to be car-free major roads seems to be in Vauxhall. Could this be an early Christmas miracle? Has TfL finally listened to the Our Vauxhall proposal for the gyratory?? Sadly no. The major road in question is definitely not the stretch of South Lambeth Road between Pleasure Gardens and Vauxhall Park as proposed by Our Vauxhall. At last week’s KOV Forum public meeting Nigel Hardy from TfL categorically denied that taking South Lambeth Road between the Pleasure Gardens and Vauxhall Park out of the gyratory would ever be an option for TfL.
On the picture in the article it looks like the ‘major car-free road’ in Vauxhall might be the planned Vauxhall District Centre in Bondway, the site of the current bus station, but this is car free already. So are we being sold something costing billions that will be replacing something we already have ? (NB; the bus station only cost £4 million) This is beginning to look a bit like a scam.
Incidentally, closing off part of Wandsworth High Street, closing an arm of the Elephant & Castle round-about, or the Stockwell round-about to cars is apparently considered viable by TfL.
