Conference at Pop Box, Brixton Station Road SW9 8PQ 1 pm – 3.30 pm
Lambeth is getting organised. On Saturday 28th November a free conference Another Lambeth is Possible will be held at POP BRIXTON. Many movements have already formed in the area to oppose the council’s plans to regenerate housing estates and turn libraries into Gyms. Next Saturday’s meeting will bring these movements together, to engage as a community, with the council.
The free event opens at 1pm with speakers Tom Chance (Green Party), Professor Loretta Lees (leading expert on gentrification), Hassina Malik (Lambeth Council Unison) and Marian Okanlawon (Guinness campaign).
Workshops will then be held with representatives from Architects for Social Housing, Black Activists Rising Against Cuts (BARAC), Brixton Rec Users Group (BRUG), C4WS Homeless Project, Generation Rent, Lambeth Housing Activists, Loughborough Junction Road Madness, Save Lambeth Libraries and Save Brixton Arches.
Residents from Angell town, Central Hill, Cressingham Gardens, Dorchester Court, Myatts Field North, South Lambeth and Westbury estates are already confirmed to attend. The hour long workshops will explore estate regeneration, insecurity and evictions and the future for Lambeth with an aim to root out community solutions.
The event at Pop Brixton will close at 3.30pm with a Q&A with local politicians including Helen Hayes MP and campaigners and proposals for future actions.
The event will then move to Art Nouveau, 77 Atlantic Road for an after party. Local artists including Latin London and Potent Whisper will perform.
