Bus station – can we trust Lambeth?

By Helen Irwin and Pauline Gaunt

For months Lib Peck has been promising that no decisions have been made, that the Community Plan, including retention of the bus station, will be properly studied, and that Lambeth will consult fully again in the Autumn.

This Wednesday, 26 August, consultants commissioned by Lambeth, were surveying face to face at Vauxhall. The questionnaire pre-supposes the demolition of the bus station, (’once the bus station canopy is removed’), the creation of a ‘shopping street environment for Bondway’, and offers no opportunity in any question to express a preference for retention of the existing bus station, or to comment on its advantages. Not only does this contradict re-assurances given, but the questionnaire is in direct opposition to a modification agreed by Lambeth in  the soon to be published Inspector’s report on the Local Plan, regarding ‘whether and when the remodelling of the bus station takes place’, and taking account of community views on this.

Some of you may have come upon the researchers yourselves and made your views known. We have written to Lib Peck. We suggest you do too, copying in the relevant ward councillors.
