Lilian Baylis Technology School (LBTS) is an 11-19 secondary school based in Vauxhall that serves North Brixton. As you may know, students are mostly from families surviving on low income jobs or benefits and have no family history of attending university or being in professional employment. In order to transform their life chances, LBTS has developed a unique 6th form mentoring scheme that you may wish to take part in.The “Adopt a Student” scheme aims to open up worlds to our students which they might otherwise feel closed to them. The idea is that people such as yourself offer to mentor a 6th form student by meeting with them once a half term (for 30-45mins) to discuss career aspirations, work options, interviewing tips, CV writing etc.
The scheme itself is designed to fit around the busy and demanding lives that the mentors have. For example, students are expected to travel to their mentor’s place of work, rather than asking that you come all the way to LBTS. As such it can take very little time on your part but is of huge benefit to the students. Just a little of your time will really make a big difference!
How can you get involved?
There is a ‘no obligation’ launch event on Wednesday 17 June 5:30pm – 7:00pm at Lilian Baylis Technology School, where more details will be given about the scheme and where you’ll hear from students and mentors who have taken part this year. There will also be snacks and even some wine. Please let Ruth Deniran know if you would like to come along to the evening. firstname.lastname@example.org
