The Council have launched its proposals on the future of cultural activities in Lambeth with a wide-ranging public consultation. The Council wants to give as many people as possible the opportunity to express their opinion on their local park, library, sports facilities and the arts. The consultation will run until Friday 24 April 2015 and you can find more details on the consultation online at http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/consultations/cultural-services-by-2020
Durning Library: As you are aware, a number of options for Durning Library have now been developed by the architects, working in partnership with the Friends and Council officers including staff from the library service and commissioning team. These options explore how the space could be used more effectively, meet community needs and look at opportunities to generate income. The consultation on the options appraisal has now finished, and the architects are developing the first draft report for review and feedback. The final report is expected by the end of February and will be made available to the local community and interested stakeholders.
As part of the Cultural Services by 2020 consultation, it is proposed to establish a community-led trust to take forward the options appraisal, and other proposals for the library, forward as part of the community hubs programme. Of the capital allocation assigned to Durning Library, there is £670,000 available for investment in the building and, subject to the Council’s approval process, this funding could be used to achieve these aspirations and be put towards redevelopment costs of a preferred option that supports a sustainable future for Durning Library.
In addition to the capital funding, the Council is exploring one off funding to support capacity building and business development of community partners in establishing this community led trust. Once details of this are available they will be shared with you and your colleagues and other interested parties.
Consulting on the future of Community Libraries in Lambeth: Following the local government funding settlement in 2013, Lambeth needs to make a £90m saving by 2018. This means making almost a £1m reduction within the libraries budget and £4m across the cultural services budget. The Council wants to work with residents to make these reductions in the best possible way – which is why this consultation has been launched.
